“in hope against hope”Posted: October 1, 2010
I am slowly reading through the Bible…. at this rate, I might finish by the time my kids are in middle school…
Genesis 22, contains the account of Abraham being tested by God. This blows my mind! God tells Abraham to sacrifice his own son. The son whom He has provided! The son Abraham had believed God for! The son through whom God had promised to “multiply his seed as the stars of the heavens”! Flip back a couple chapters and you see Abraham believing God for his son. Fast forward now God is telling him to sacrifice that same son?! Sometimes… well a lot of times… I don’t understand the ways of my God! What is going on here? I can not image how Abraham felt! But then notice in verse 5 of Genesis 22, Abraham says to his servant, “we will worship and return to you. He speaks to the servant as if they will both return back down the mountain!
Further proof of his faith in God is in verse 7 Later Issac is asking his dad, “where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham replies, “God will provided for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son”. I always thought it was the act of sacrificing his son that was the worship but after further examination it seemsit is not the act of tying his son to the alter that but yet the act of belief that God will provide a sacrifice that pleased God! Abraham believed God would provide! He believed the promise God had given him, even when that same God asked him to give it all up!
I am a doer. I think it is easy to “do” something that will please God! The act of resting and believing and have faith in the Lord is difficult. I want to get my hands on something and make it happen.
There are times when you have done all you can physically do, obeyed God to the fullest and you are still empty handed…. leaving you only to wait… for God to provide…
Mark and I are in this season. We are in that season financially. I believe God literally had to “bind us” to the alter so to speak, so that we wouldn’t get our hands on anything and we could simply watch God provide. But He is giving us the opportunity to believe him and “in hope against hope” believe!
Maybe you too are believing in God to come through financially, or maybe you are like Abraham and believing God for a child, or maybe you are desperate to see God move in a mighty way or are in one of hundreds of other situations that require you to have faith that requires you to believe in “hope against hope”. Have faith! He will provide! Praise God for the opportunity for faith and the opportunity to see Him alone come through in a great way!
“In hope against hope he believed…. with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able to perform.” Romans 4:18-21
